About nine years ago, one of my dad’s colleagues bought a Tutor Doctor franchise, and hired me to manage the day-to-day operations. Our agreement was that if I hit certain benchmarks over the next two years, I’d get the option to buy the franchise from him. Six months later, I reached those goals and took over the territory.

Before Tutor Doctor, I spent five years working with an eLearning firm. That’s where I saw the need for tailored and individualized education. The “one size fits all” approach doesn’t work for a lot of people, and many students can do more than they ever imagined if the right person works with them one-on-one.

Clarissa and I were newly married when I took over the franchise, and she helped out a lot behind the scenes. She actually was an entrepreneur before this, starting and running a business that made custom suits for women. It wasn’t too long before we realized how well we work together and she joined full-time. Now we run a network of 11 locations with more than 350 tutors, serving more than 1,000 families a year!

I fell in love with Tutor Doctor because of the positive impact we have on students. The company’s values are my values - empathy and understanding, ingenuity to form to others’ needs, curiosity to keep learning, ownership and accountability, and grit to keep moving forward. You can see every day how these values make a difference.

A few things make us stand out from other supplementary education options. We provide in-home, one-on-one tutoring instead of gathering students in a classroom. We hand-pick each tutor for each student to make sure they’re a good fit for each other. And we focus on the professional development of our team. We want their career opportunities to be wide open because of the experience they’ve had with us, and we make it a point to create those opportunities.

We use Text Request every day, mostly to communicate with our tutors. A lot of them are Millennials and university students. They aren’t checking their emails, but they always have their phones, and texting is how they prefer to communicate, anyway.

Text Request helps tremendously in coordinating schedules between students and tutors. It’s nice because it’s on a desktop, so our staff doesn’t have to do anything extra or switch devices during the day.
