How to Integrate Click-to-Text with Your Website and More

Last updated on

“Click-to-Text” is a catchy name for a button that opens a text message when clicked. It’s a flexible feature that can help you get more leads on mobile devices and offer better service to your current customers.

Click-to-Text can be used in at least six ways. We’ll cover each briefly below, focusing on how and why to integrate Click-to-Text with your website.

Why should you use Click-to-Text?

In 2017, mobile devices accounted for 70% internet usage worldwide, and about half of all web searches.

People - your targets - are getting on their phones to research companies and choose who to work with. About 9/10 consumers also want to message a business.

So people are searching for you from their phones, and they want to message you. Click-to-Text makes it easy for them to text your business directly.

For you, Click-to-Text means more leads and being better able to service customers with only a small upfront task. It’s a win-win! Below we’ll give you the step-by-step guide to getting Click-to-Text on your website and tracking who uses it.

3 Ways to Integrate Click-to-Text with Your Website

Simple Click-to-Text

The simplest way to add Click-to-Text to your site is by adding a small piece of code (below) wherever you want to prompt people to text you. The base code is:

<a href=”sms:14232180111“>Send us a text!</a>

Replace the 10-digit text number with your own text number. Note: you must leave the 1 in front of your 10-digit number!

Then replace the call-to-action with your own call to action.

The bold is where the message will be sent. The underlined is what will be displayed on your website. For design and placement questions, please refer to your webmaster.

We recommend adding this to your home and contact pages, if nowhere else. This code can also be added to an existing button on your website. Now, mobile viewers can click this button to open a text addressed to your business, like this:

Send us a text!

Note, the Simple Click-to-Text code does not include lead tracking, while the next two options do. For more details on simple Click-to-Text, view our guide: What is Click-to-Text, and How Can My Business Use It?

Mobile Floating Click-to-Text button

This button will only show on mobile devices, and will hover at the bottom of the screen as viewers scroll down the page. Clicking the button opens a text addressed to your business’ number.

You’ll need your webmaster to add this button to all your site pages, but here’s how you can customize your button and generate the code your webmaster needs.

  1. Go to the Click-to-Text tab of your Integrations menu option. Note, only Administrators and Managers can access integrations. For more details, view our User Permissions page.
  2. Locate the Floating Button section.
  3. In their respective fields, enter the hex values of colors you want for your button, button border, and font/text. We recommend using colors consistent with your branding. Here’s a resource you can use to find the right hex value for your brand’s colors, if needed: http://www.color-hex.com/
  4. Enter the button text. Currently, you can use up to 11 characters, so something simple like “Text us!” is a good option.
  5. Click Generate.
  6. Copy the newly generated code, and send it to your webmaster or developer to add to each page of your website.

People who text you using this floating Click-to-Text button will be recorded and tracked in Text Request. You can then pull a report on first-time texters (new contacts) to see how many leads you’ve gotten in a given time period. We’ll cover how to pull a report below.

Add Click-to-Text to an Existing Button

If you are already tracking button clicks in your Google Analytics (or other website analytics provider), you might want to add Click-to-Text to an existing button (or element) on your website.

This way, you’ll be able to track how many times the button was clicked through your analytics, and see how many people texted you from that button in Text Request. To add Click-to-Text to an existing button:

  1. Go to the Click-to-Text tab of your Integrations menu option. Note, only Administrators and Managers can access integrations. For more details, view our User Permissions page.
  2. Locate the Integrate with an Existing Element section.
  3. Get the Element ID of the button you want to integrate Click-to-Text with from your webmaster or developer.
  4. Add the button’s element ID to the Element ID field.
  5. Click Generate.
  6. Copy and Send this code to your webmaster or developer to add to your website.

To save a few steps, you can just have your webmaster or developer generate the code themselves.

Now mobile viewers will be able to click this button and text you. You’ll also be able to track all these leads by pulling a Click-to-Text report (details below).

How to Pull a Click-to-Text Report

By pulling a Click-to-Text report, you’ll be able to see how many people have texted you for the first time through your Click-to-Text floating button or existing element integration (i.e. how many text leads you’ve gotten).

Included in the Click-to-Text report is:

  • The phone number for each contact
  • Their name, if saved in Text Request
  • The time and date they texted you
  • Their original message

To pull a Click-to-Text report:

  1. Go to the Click-to-Text tab of your Reports menu option. Note, only Administrators and Managers can access Reports. For more details, view our User Permissions page.
  2. Select the date range for your report.
  3. Click Create Report. An Excel file (.xls) will download.
