How to Add, Edit, Delete, and Archive Individual Contacts

Last updated on

Over time, you might need to make updates to contact's information or status. Below we’ll show you how to add, edit, delete, and archive individual contacts in Text Request.

How to Add Individual Contacts

From the Queue

  1. Click the Compose Message button.
  2. Enter the new contact’s 10-digit phone number, the message you want to send them, and click Send. The contact will now be saved in your Address Book and appear in auto-fill suggestions. To update a contact's name at any time, see the Edit section below.

From Your Address Book

  1. Go to the Address Book tab of your Contact’s menu option. Note only administrators and managers can view the Address Book. For more details, view our User Permissions page.
  2. Click the Add a New Contact button.
  3. Add the contact’s name and 10-digit phone number.
  4. Click Create. The contact will now be saved in your Address Book, and appear in auto-fill suggestions.

To learn about adding multiple contacts at a time, view our Import/Export guide.

Anyone who texts you (e.g. leads) will be automatically saved in your Address Book. You can edit their information by following the steps below.

How to Edit Individual Contacts

Contact phone numbers cannot be edited. Phone numbers are unique identifiers in Text Request, and so, for compliance purposes, cannot be edited or deleted.

If you need to update a contact’s phone number, you can archive the current contact (see below), and create a new contact (see above) using the updated phone number.

To edit a contact’s name, group membership, or additional details, follow these steps:

From the Queue

Click on the contact beneath their conversation block (contacts are hyperlinked blue), and make changes in contact details box as needed.

From the Group Queue

  1. Click on a group message that was sent to the contact you wish to edit.
  2. From the Group Message Details screen, locate the contact you wish to edit. For larger lists, use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + F” on each page to search for the contact. Note, Ctrl + F only searches the page of contacts you're currently viewing.
  3. Click on the contact’s phone number.
  4. Make changes in the contact details box as needed.

From the Address Book

Click on the phone number of the contact you wish to edit. Make changes in the contact details box as needed.

To search for a contact in your Address Book, use the Contact Filters section. For more details, view our Search Contacts page.

How to Delete Individual Contacts

For compliance purposes, contacts in Text Request cannot be deleted. However, contacts can be archived (see below), which will remove them from all groups, auto-fill suggestions, and remove their conversation block from the Queue.

If you need to update a contact’s phone number, you can archive the old contact (see below), and create a new contact (see above) using the updated phone number.

How to Archive Individual Contacts

Contacts cannot be deleted from Text Request (for compliance purposes), so archiving is our way of removing contacts as needed. Archived contacts are removed from all groups and auto-fill suggestions. Their conversation blocks are removed from the Queue.

They can still be found in your Address Book using the Archived Contacts filter, and on the Group Message Details screen of any group message they were sent.

Note, if you send a new message to an existing collection of contacts, that message will also send to any archived contacts in that collection. For more details, see our Group Messages page.

From the Queue

  1. Click on the contact (hyperlinked blue) beneath their Message Block.
  2. Click the Archive button.
  3. Confirm.

From the Group Queue

  1. Click on a group message sent to the contact you wish to archive.
  2. Find the contact in question. For larger lists, use the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + F” on each page to search for the contact. Note, Ctrl + F only searches the page of contacts you're currently viewing.
  3. Click on the contact’s phone number.
  4. Click the Archive button.
  5. Confirm.

From the Address Book

  1. Either scroll down to the contact you wish to archive, or use the Contact Filters section to search for them. For more on Contact Filters, view our Search Contacts page.
  2. Click the green Archive button next to the contact.
  3. Confirm.

From the Message Thread

  1. Click on the desired contact's conversation block.
  2. At the top of the screen, click the contact's name (highlighted blue).
  3. Click the green Archive button.
  4. Confirm.

Alternative: You can also click on the contact’s phone number, and click the Archive button within the contact details box.

How to Unarchive a Contact

  1. Go to your Address Book, under the Contacts menu option.
  2. In the Contact Filters section, choose “Archived Contacts” from the dropdown menu. Your Address Book will change to show all archived contacts.
  3. Search for the contact in question using the Contacts Filter.
  4. Click the Unarchive button next to the contact. You can also click on the contact’s phone number, and then choose to unarchive the contact from their contact details box.

Unarchived contacts will need to be manually added back to any groups they were previously a part of (or that you'd like them to be a part of).
