SMS Subscribers: Maintain Your Contact List

Getting people to join your SMS subscriber list is great! But you need a plan to keep them engaged and happy. Here are three tips for maintaining your list, so you get the most returns from it.

1. Send Relevant Content

Give contacts what you promised.

Otherwise, they may get frustrated and opt out. That means if you advertise you send helpful tips every Thursday, you send helpful tips on Thursdays.

It won’t hurt you to occasionally slip in an ad for a new product or event here and there. But if you consistently deviate from what you promised, or spam send too many messages at once, your subscribers will notice.

The beauty of an SMS subscriber list is that you already know contacts are interested in what you have to offer—hence why they opted in to begin with. You don’t want to jeopardize that interest by sending them irrelevant or spammy content

2. Remove Disengaged Contacts

Combing through your contact list keeps carriers and your wallet happy.

Most of the time subscribers will opt out on their own if they no longer want to receive your messages. That said, sometimes they don’t realize they have to text "OPT OUT" to do this. When this happens, you’ll get response like:

"I don't want these anymore." or "How do I get these to stop?"

That’s why it’s your job to pay attention to customers’ responses and manually suppress contacts who express they no longer want to be subscribed.

This ensures you:

  1. Stay on carriers’ good side (you don’t want folks blocking you because they didn’t understand how to opt out)

  2. Aren’t wasting your usage on contacts who aren’t part of your target audience any more

The healthier your subscriber list is, the better your message delivery rates and returns will be.

3. Monitor Analytics

Send subscribers texts they actually like.

Every time you send a Mass Text to your SMS subscribers, you can view the message’s analytics to see things like how many subscribers responded or how many opted out. This is huge for determining which messages are working vs. annoying your subscribers.

Pinpoint which kinds of texts regularly encourage engagement from your subscribers, so you can continue sending more of them. That’s how you’ll make the biggest impact with your list.
