Case Study

Housing Channel was founded in 1991, and I joined the agency in 1995. We exist to provide critical assistance to current and potential homeowners in all stages of ownership, and we’ve become the leading housing non-profit organization in the Fort Worth, TX, area.

We work closely with Tarrant County, the cities of Arlington, Fort Worth, Irving, and Plano, and many other financial partners to provide low and moderate income families with:

  • Down payment and closing cost assistance programs
  • New construction of single-family homes
  • Homeowner education and credit counseling
  • And affordable rental housing

Since I became the executive director in 2007, our team has completed over $7 million in housing projects, which has had an incredible impact on our neighborhoods hit hardest by the 2008 foreclosure crisis. But construction is only one part of what we do.

Our goal is to help people build wealth through homeownership. We provide financial assistance as often as we can, but we focus on creating educated and empowered homeowners who can then lift up their own neighborhoods and strengthen their own communities. That’s where Text Request helps us.

Our counseling department conducts bi-monthly Homebuyer Orientation Classes, as well of lots of one-on-one meetings. We send texts to remind clients of classes and to schedule meetings.

We’ve found this works better than emailing or even calling. Not everyone reads an email or answers the phone, but everyone looks at a text. This helps us engage more people in our community better, which ultimately furthers our mission.

I’ve been with Housing Channel since 1995, and have led the completion of over $7 million in housing projects since becoming the executive director in 2007. I’ve served on the board of the Tarrant County Homeless Coalition, and currently serve on the board of the Community Design Center of Fort Worth and as a member of the Housing Partnership Network.
