What Are Text Message Sequences and How Do They Work?
What is a Sequence?
A text message Sequence is a pre-scheduled series of texts anchored around a specific date or time of year. You create the messages, set the timing, and Sequences automatically sends them to your contact list—before the date, on the date, and after the date.
Sequences in action look something like:
Promotional sales and limited-time offers
Insurance and subscription renewals
Seasonal campaigns
Event announcements and follow-ups
Appointment scheduling pushes
Re-engagement campaigns
Think of a Sequence like a campaign that runs itself. You’re not manually texting customers to remind them about an upcoming renewal, event, or sale. Build your campaign once, schedule it, and Sequences takes care of the rest.
How Does a Sequence Work?
Every Sequence is centered around an anchor date—a specific date or time or year your campaign revolves around. From there, schedule individual texts to go out at set intervals before, on, and after the date.
Here’s an example of how a Sequence might look for a retail sale:
7 days before: Teaser text announcing the sale
3 days before: Drop the details (what’s on sale, how long it runs, etc.)
1 day before: Last-chance teaser to build up excitement
Day of: Announce that the sale is live and include a link to your site
1 day after: Last chance reminder before the sale ends
3 days after: Follow-up or thank-you message
Once the Sequence is built and your contact list is attached, it sends automatically without you having to lift a finger. That way, nothing falls through the cracks.
Drip Campaigns vs. Sequences: What’s the Difference?
It’s easy to mix up the two, but they work differently.
A drip campaign is structured to send messages on a fixed timeline after someone opts in, regardless of a specific date.
For example:
When a lead fills out a form
A customer makes a purchase
A patient opts in to an SMS subscriber list
From there, that action kicks off a series of automated messages.
Sequences are anchored to a real event like a sale, a seasonal offer, or a product launch. That way, messages are sent relative to that date rather than relative to when someone joins an SMS subscriber list.
With Sequences, everyone gets the same messages at the same time. It’s not about what the contact does—it’s about what date is coming up.
When Should You Use Sequences?
Marketing Campaigns
Promotional campaigns are one of the strongest use cases for Sequences.
That can look like:
A flash sale
A seasonal discount
A product launch
These examples all have a natural before/on/after pattern that maps perfectly to how Sequences are designed. You can tease an offer early, deliver details when it goes live, and follow up before it ends.
General Customer Communications
Sequences work well when you have a date your customers need to be aware of, and you want to make sure they don’t forget.
Instead of sending one text and hoping they see it, you can build a Sequence that keeps your message top of mind as the date approaches.
Good fits for general customer communications include:
Policy renewal reminders
Policy expiration notices
Seasonal service windows
Open enrollment periods
You can also set up a Sequence to ease customers into conversation prompts for online reviews, testimonials, referrals, and annual updates.
Craft a messaging strategy for specific audiences in a way that won’t overwhelm your customers, but delight them instead—all while saving you time and extra steps.
Events and Announcements
Sequences make it easy for you to build anticipation so you can share details at the right time.
Whether you’re:
Spreading word about a community event
Promoting an upcoming webinar
Announcing a grand opening
Reminding donors about a fundraiser
The structured timing of a Sequence keeps your text messaging strategy organized and consistent across your entire contact list.
Real-Life Examples of Sequences
Here’s a look at how different industries use Sequences in practice.
Insurance
Insurance customers don’t always remember when it’s time to renew their policy or request a new quote. Sequences helps agencies automatically send reminders leading up to renewal dates, on the due date itself, and follow up afterward.
Example: Schedule a series of reminders 30 days, 7 days, and 1 day before a policy renewal deadline to help customers stay covered and reduce missed renewals.
Home and Consumer Service Providers
Timing is everything for service-based businesses. Sequences help keep customers engaged before, during, and after your busiest seasons without requiring manual outreach.
Example: A landscaping company can send appointment reminders before spring begins, then follow up throughout the season with maintenance tips and service promotions.
Tutors
Tutoring demand typically follows a rigid and predictable schedule. Sequences help tutors stay ahead of busy periods and keep students engaged throughout the school year.
Example: Automatically remind families to book tutoring sessions before finals week, then send study tips and scheduling reminders throughout exam season.
Medical Professionals
Patient communication shouldn’t stop after a single reminder. Sequences help healthcare providers deliver timely messages that encourage preventative care and increase appointment attendance.
Example: Text flu shot reminders in the fall, followed by educational health tips and appointment availability updates throughout flu season.
Home Health Care
Home healthcare agencies rely on timely communication with patients, caregivers, and family members. Sequences help automate appointment reminders, care updates, and ongoing support messages.
Example: Schedule a series of messages to remind families about upcoming care assessments, then follow up with helpful resources and care plan updates throughout the year.
Wellness and Fitness
The biggest part of keeping members motivated is maintaining consistent communication. Sequences help fitness businesses nurture leads and encourage long-term engagement throughout their membership with you.
Example: Launch a “New Year, New You” campaign with motivational messages and progress check-ins spaced out across several weeks, or however long your campaign goes for.
High Touch Retail
Major sale events are likely to have a larger turnout when customers hear from you more than once. Sequences help retailers build anticipation around sales events, drive action, and maximize revenue.
Example: Promote a Black Friday sale with a countdown message series set to send texts a month before, two weeks before, a week before, a day before, a launch-day announcement, and a final “last chance” reminder before the sale ends.

FAQ
1. What is a text message Sequence?
A text message Sequence is a series of pre-written texts scheduled ahead of time to be sent automatically around a specific date or season. Instead of sending a single one-time text, a Sequence delivers multiple touchpoints (before, on, and after a key date) so customers stay informed and engaged at every step.
2. How is a text message Sequence different from a drip campaign?
A drip campaign is structured to send messages on a fixed timeline after someone opts in, regardless of a specific date. Sequences are anchored to a real event, like a sale, a seasonal offer, or a product launch. That way, messages are sent relative to that date rather than relative to when someone joins an SMS subscriber list.
3. How is a text message Sequence different from a mass text?
A mass text is a one-time text sent to a large group of contacts. A Sequence is a series of mass texts sent at different intervals around a date. Instead of receiving one message, your contacts receive a structured series of text messages over a period of time.
4. Are text message Sequences TCPA-compliant?
Yes, as long as you have opt-in consent from your contacts before texting them. Text Request helps you manage consent and compliance as part of your text messaging workflow.
5. When should I use a text message Sequence?
Use a text message Sequence anytime you need to communicate around a specific event or date.
Common examples include:
Product launches
Holiday promotions
Seasonal sales
Appointment reminders
Event registrations
Customer onboarding
Sequences help keep your audience engaged before, during, and after the event without manually scheduling each text.
